Significance of output:

Invited by the editor, after a conference presentation, to submit this work to a special issue on “Solid-state lasers: status and perspectives”, it detailed a step change in the efficiency and output power performance of the Nd:YAG laser operating on the quasi-four-level transition. The content outlined design strategies that enabled this international first (35W output power), leading to subsequent output power world records. This work attracted a seminar invitation at Coherent Inc. headquarters (N. Hodgson, San Jose USA), and a $79k contract with NASA (NNG10RD39P) to explore the feasibility of this architecture for power amplifiers in their satellite LIDAR systems.
