Significance of output:

This paper describes a fundamental study of the dynamic behaviour of thin annular plates and identifies and resolves discrepancies between established classical approaches and finite element (FE) analysis. This new classical approach, verified by FE, allows simpler analysis of vibrating plates and thereby makes an important contribution to the basic understanding of complex vibrating structures. The work is facilitating the production of optimized PZT devices and has therefore paved the way for our development of a new generation of simple, high frequency ultrasonic transducers that can be printed, offering the opportunity for low cost, high performance ultrasonic imaging systems.
