Prints Tokyo, Japan Printmaking Association

Over the past 15 years I have been making a series of interrelated prints based on the idea of "proposed works" which only exist as propositions on paper or in model form. In a world so reliant on technology, these works propose a range of simplified actions (often involving simple acts such as walking or looking). These proposed actions are intended to heighten the experience of everyday occurrences by eliminating distractions associated with modern life. The works are rooted in drawing, autographic and technical, based on scale representations from maps and plans, and take the status of blueprint: they need never exist but the information contained within the work can allow participation of a kind. The Prints Tokyo exhibition consists of a three-colour lithograph printed from offset lithographic plates. The print posits a structure which allows for an extended walk above and below ground. This piece is based on a meticulous digital line drawing that follows the conventions of technical drawing, representing hidden spaces and planes by broken lines through plan and elevation sections. This allows the viewer to unpick and navigate the space available to walk on if they are aware of the conventions of this type of drawing. This work will be exhibited alongside another 117 pieces selected from all over the world outside of Japan, including UK, USA, China, India, Canada to name a few. Other artists represented in the exhibition from the UK include David Faithfull, Rebecca Salter and Bronwen Sleigh amongst others. This exhibition will display a large cross section of prints being made today from across the world. The accompanying symposium will have a Keynote lecture by Liao Shiou Ping, President, Taiwan Art Academy; Tadayoshi Nakabayashi, Director, Japan Print Association and Noriko Yanagisawa, Member, Japan Print Association.
