Additional information

The title of this chapter reflects the writer’s particular and ongoing ‘mission’ to encourage greater understanding of the picturebook-maker’s art (and the nature and meaning of visual literacy) among both academics and the general public. The title of the chapter refers to looking further both in the context of greater understanding of pictures and the picturebook as a visual medium and to looking further afield internationally when examining trends in picturebooks. Salisbury draws on his experience of working with MA Children’s Book Illustration students from around the world and his experience as an international jury member at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair to draw attention to new and unfamiliar stylistic approaches to visual storytelling. The chapter also goes into the relationship between processes/ media and content by discussing individual artists’ relationships with both digital and traditional media and how these have shaped their personal visual vocabularies.
