Architecture of Oblivion: Ruins and Historical Consciousness in Modern Russia
Spanning more than two centuries, this monograph has required considerable contextual reading. It pieces together evidence drawn from an extensive range of sources in various media, including fiction, poetry, diaries, personal letters, photographs, engravings, paintings, the press, and documentary films, and thus required the use of various methods of analysis. It also contrasts the Russian treatment of ruins with that practiced in Western Europe, as well as with philosophical constructions of the meaning of ruins. Due to the range and variety of its sources, the deployment of various methods, and the complexity of its argument, it required particularly extensive research.
