Assessment of crystallographic influence on material properties of calcite brachiopods
This paper was the result of a long established collaboration between GU and UWS. There is an increasing interest in studying biominerals to gain insight into natural evolutionary processes and to develop more advanced/sustainable engineering materials by replicating the best features of natural materials. This paper is among the earliest in using a combination of EBSD and Nanoindentation techniques to studying such materials, which allows possible correlation between crystallography and material properties to be established at a detailed scale and high spatial resolution. This has led to more recent studies in adopting such an approach in studying other materials.
