Polypyrrole Nanoparticles: A Potential Optical Coherence Tomography Contrast Agent for Cancer Imaging
We reported the first use of an organic conducting polymer latex as a contrast agent for optical coherence tomography (OCT). Compared to organic dyes and gold nanoparticles the agent displays much more intense absorption at the key OCT wavelength of 1300 nm. A patent application was filed (P130869GB) and follow-on funding was received from the Sheffield EPSRC KTA grant (£40K) and a commercial company (Vivacta Ltd) to develop the agent further. Groups at Xiamen, Soochow and Peking universities (China) have verified the excellent optical properties of this material by applying it as a photothermal cancer therapy agent.
