Angiogenin induces nitric oxide synthesis in endothelial cells through PI-3 and Akt kinases.
VC-funded research (Ipso Ventures Ltd. ) showed for the first time that angiogenin at physiological concentrations activates nitric oxide synthase. Real-time detection enabled identification of intracellular pathways. Excellent agreement with fluorohistochemical methods taking 24h per slide. Invited keynotes at Electrochem 2011 (Bath), Electrochem 2012 (Dublin). Since applied to cultured tissue and stem cells, published by us in BBA 2010 and Chem. Comm. 2011. Invited to teach the technology at 2nd European Summer School on Nanobiotechnology, Hirschegg, Austria 2011. Continuing work is funded by National Research Foundation of South Africa and Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (#19164/1; £9k and #74699; £23k)
