Additional information

Different equivalent single layer shear deformation theories are used to model the behaviour of functionally graded materials (FGMs). FGMs are ideal candidates for applications involving severe thermal gradients in advanced aerospace structures and engines: a ceramic-rich region of the graded composite can be exposed to hot temperatures while a metallic-rich portion ensures the necessary load-carrying capability at cold temperatures. The study was carried out in collaboration with the Politecnito di Torino, Italy, and funded by a grant from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal. Dynamic models were verified by experimental results obtained by Torino.
