Additional information

Optimised compositions of single crystal nickel-based superalloys – for jet propulsion and power generation applications – are isolated by modelling. This represents the first attempt to design grades of these alloys using theory, thus avoiding traditional empiricism. New compositional spaces are identified for testing. This paper has been highly influential: (i) it has been used to design a new corrosion-resistant alloy which is qualified for Siemens' SGT-800 turbine (ii) it has spawned similar activities at General Electric, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce and (iii) it is regarded as an exemplar for the ICME and Materials Genome activities in the USA.
