Mission und Kolonialismus - Mission als Kolonialismus: Anmerkungen zu einer Wahlverwandtschaft
In contrast to previous studies, which emphasized the relationship of Christian missions with colonialism, this chapter regards both as phenomena in their own right, pointing to the structural parallels between the two. The characterization of their relationship as an elective affinity, shifts attention to the colonial structures of mission societies and the churches they established. On the basis of a critical engagement with Homi Bhabha’s theories, the essay provides an analysis of the sociocultural framework of conversion processes, the ensuing power structures within mission churches and finally the emergence of independent churches as processes of decolonization.
