Additional information

<18> This paper presented what was later called "Stam's Conjecture", on the level of collision resistance obtained from block cipher based hash function constructions. This conjecture was later proved by Steinberger and co-authors in two papers at EuroCrypt 2010 and Crypto 2012. The conjecture's optimal bounds were used as a partial metric in the SHA-3 competition run by NIST over the next five years.
