Double-weighted statement

This monograph, the most significant to appear on Clare since 1987, had a twenty-year genesis. It deals with two linked topics, Clare’s engagement with the ‘community of poets’ (a topic on which there was little existing scholarship), and his representation of the culture and ecology of his village community. In order to construct an adequate account and devise adequate ‘sociable’ models, it was necessary to participate actively in the development of Clare studies, especially though editing JCSJ (1992-2007); editing the Labouring-class Poets series (1998-2006); and hosting Clare Forum and John Clare Society events, leading to relevant preliminary publications and editorial activity.
