English abstract
This study of the character of Peter in Luke’s writings compares the Greek text of the standard edition with that of an early manuscript, Codex Bezae. Unlike the familiar portrait of an infallible apostle, the Bezan picture presents a man who is resistant to the radically new teaching of Jesus because of his attachment to Jewish traditions. His ‘conversion’ to a full acceptance of the gospel is not seen in Codex Bezae until some years after Jesus’ death. It is suggested that this critical appraisal of Peter was later revised once he had become the leader of the Church.
