Discontinuous fluctuation distribution
<13>Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithms frequently misinterpret the underlying physics, with critical implications, particularly for high-speed flows. Our novel generalisation of residual distribution can capture discontinuities exactly within a framework that correctly interprets multidimensional smooth flows, potentially offering improved aerodynamic lift/drag calculations and flood prediction. This technique: prompted an invited plenary (ICFD 25th Anniversary Meeting, Oxford), invited lectures (University of Zaragoza) and seven further international conference presentations; is used by the leading fluid mechanics group at INRIA, Bordeaux (three follow-on joint publications); and underpinned subsequent work (£336K EPSRC-funded, EP/G003645/01, Hubbard PI) which developed more accurate and efficient CFD algorithms.
