Additional information

This textbook targets students in Higher Education and professional technologists and combines practitioner-level tacit knowledge with academic analysis and research. Carr & Latham’s Technology of Clothing Manufacture was first published in 1988. The 4th edition appeared in 2008, reflecting continuing demand for a HE-level technology resource for clothing students and professionals. Extensively updated and edited by myself, the book introduced two new chapters, both of which were based on personal research activities. The first was concerned with the technology and management of colour (a topic that emerged from my digital printing of textiles research and my research into colour management for industry). This chapter could not have been written without involvement in the DTI-funded project: “Concurrent product development with design for the environment in the Textile and Clothing industry”. The second chapter was entitled Troubleshooting in the sewing room, and much of the advice was based on my own research and practical experiences. This chapter was stimulated by feedback from the publisher, who stressed the need for a step-by-step guide. Numerous other minor changes were made to the book, responding to developments in the industry.

The book provides a state-of-the-art overview of the technologies used in the assembly of clothes, and guidance on how that information can be used in industry. Each chapter draws attention to relevant research, with several of them heavily influenced by my own publications. These include the sections on cutting room technologies, sewing problems, automation, alternative methods of joining, colour management, and new product development.

The book is widely used around the world, not only in the UK but also in the leading centres of textile/clothing production and higher education in the US and in Hong Kong.
