Additional information

This paper is about the clinically significant finding of a carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite nanocomposite for medical applications. It highlights the critical roles of the understanding of the in vitro biological response to nanoparticles in the formulation of new composites. The importance of controlling the microstructure and composition in the scaffold design has been followed up through several research projects and led to collaboration between UCL and KCL on the award, in 2010, of a post-doctoral fellowship for the “Development of a ‘bioconnecting’ nanocomposite scaffold for hard and soft tissue repair and regeneration”, funded by Orthopaedic Research UK (Ref 473, http://www.oruk.org/funding-reserach/reserach-projects/).
