Manufacturing and hydrodynamic assessment of a novel aortic valve made of a new nanocomposite polymer
This work describes the manufacturing and assessment of a heart valve using nanocomposite biomaterial tehcnology characterised in Publication 1 (Acta Biomaterialia 2009;5(7):2409-2417) and on the design described in Publication 2 (J Med Eng Technol 2010;34(1):7-22). The resulting device, developed in collaboration with UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science, has shown significantly superior hydrodynamic performance compared to equivalent commercially available porcine valves. Moreover, this valve design is more suitable for new minimally invasive technologies and it has been selected for a novel transcatheter valve being developed at UCL with funding from Wellcome Trust (095747/Z/11/Z, £1.2M) and J&J (£30k).
