Exchanging Glances: Ambivalence in Twentieth-Century Photographs of German Sinti
This incorporates a small amount of material included in a publication submitted in RAE2008, notably that relating to the argument about the ambivalence of Nazi-racist photography. The present article introduces new elements of the photographic archive, giving particular attention to the evidence of intimacy and the theme of verbal and physical ‘sex-talk’ in Gypsy-Gadje relations. It also has a different disciplinary focus. The earlier publication was a study in racial policy exploring the ways in which the ethnographers’ tools were operationalised for genocidal purposes; this one is a study of photographic practice, which emphasises Gypsy agency in the 'photographic event'.
