Additional information

This paper describes the outcomes of an international collaborative study funded by the Norwegian Research Council based on the pioneering EPSRC-funded research that I led to investigate the role of the car in children’s lives and the consequent impacts on their physical activity levels. It demonstrates the complex issues involved in carrying out systematic international comparative research. It provides evidence to show that children in Britain are allowed less freedom to travel than in Denmark, Finland and Norway. The research has influenced central and local government policies improving health, welfare and quality of life for example use of walking buses.
