Additional information

The paper describes the design and first practical demonstrator of a wearable, integrated, autonomous system that monitors a subject’s physiological parameters and controls an on-body cooling system in real-time, to decrease the risk of heat stress. Through field trials, prior thermal sensation models are shown to be invalid within the enclosed suit. The research resulted from the £49,125 DTA06/2006 grant co-funded by NP Aerospace (Mark Oldroyd, EOD Product Manager, moldroyd@np-aerospace.co.uk). The system was extensively used in subsequent empirical research (supported by the £29M LCVTP grant) towards assessing and modelling occupant comfort in vehicles.
