The research was funded by the EPSRC (the FRMRC programme) and conducted in conjunction with eight HEIs in the UK and Tianjin University, China. This paper details a new method for predicting shallow water flows with rapidly moving boundaries, dynamically linking surface water and groundwater flows. The resulting implicit model was applied to predict flood wave propagation over floodplains. It has led to further research conducted by members of the HRC at Cardiff University and has secured further funding from the EPSRC (part of the EPSRC FRMRC II programme).
