Additional information

A new method for measuring the toughness of thin composite laminates fabricated using woven carbon cloth is described. The method produces measurements of toughness in agreement with standard measurement techniques (e.g. single-edge notch measurements), but produces additional information on the energy absorbed during through-thickness penetration of the laminates. In contrast to conventional measurement techniques, the technique also enables reliable toughness measurements to be made rapidly, and when limited material is available.
