This original piece of research investigates the multi-disciplinary nature of car-pool schemes. The paper combines aspects of both the engineering science and psychology and as such presents results in both statistical form and in terms of public perception. It has direct relevance and practical applicability to transport planners as it identifies the key factors in the successful promotion of such schemes. These "soft measure" schemes are increasingly being encouraged to promote sustainable options to single occupancy car-use and to help alleviate traffic congestion issues.
