Double-weighted statement

Passionate Amateurs argues that theatre in modern capitalism can help us think afresh about work, time and freedom. Its title concept is a theoretical and historical figure, someone whose work in theatre is undertaken within capitalism, but motivated by a love which desires something different. The development of this figure and the arguments it enables has involved (1) sustained engagement over a period of seven years with core research materials (in three languages), (2) substantial historical synthesis to connect modern theatre to classical (Greek) and romantic (German) ideas and practices, (3) deep reading of key philosophical work (Benjamin, Nancy, Rancière).
