French. How can the concept of the Self in theatre be discussed with regard to the actor, the author and the character? This philosophical essay focuses on the Enlightenment period and debates concerning the Subject (identity of the actor) and the “I” (the role) which were developed by philosophers including Denis Diderot in his Observation sur une brochure intitule Garrick ou les Acteurs anglais published in 1769. It examines how the philosophy of the art can relate, in terms of acting, to the philosophy of the mind.
