Deacon was a postdoctoral fellow with whom Smith had worked with at the University of Manchester. The data for this publication came from an experiment at Argonne National Laboratory in the USA using the Gammasphere spectrometer; Smith was spokesperson for the experiment, and led the collaboration. Smith carried out the data analysis in parallel with Deacon. Deacon is first named author as he needed to establish his career and secure a permanent post. Smith wrote the majority of the codes used in the data analysis.
