Additional information

Reporting research funded by EPSRC (studentship 07001545) and the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust, this output describes a new Hummers method based synthesis of graphene. Material conductivity is high enough that it can be used as an electrode material in a novel graphene based ring microelectrode device, for which the paper presents a rigorous methodology for its reliable characterisation in terms of microelectrode size. The sensor is proposed for use in process control, environmental monitoring and in vivo studies. It has led to further funding through the Centre for Global Eco-Innovation of a CASE studentship in partnership with Nanoflex Ltd (neville.freeman@nanoflex.com).
