Corrugated Rectangular Waveguide Tunable Backward Wave Oscillator for Terahertz Applications
The availability of vacuum electron tubes for the development of THz frequency-based technologies solves the inadequacy of solid state and optoelectronic technologies for this application. This research, funded by the international EU FP7 OPTHER (Optically Driven THz amplifier) project, reports a novel backward wave oscillator (BWO) that demonstrates a record output power of >100mW at 1 THz, over a wide tuning frequency range. The BWO operates at low beam voltage to be affordable, compact and thus marketable. This paper has led to a collaboration with the University of Davis (Prof. Luhmann) for a BWO for nuclear fusion plasma diagnostics.
