English abstract

This monograph is the first general assessment of archaeological heritage management practice in Austria. It examines the evolution of the ‘archaeological’ sections of the Denkmalschutzgesetz up to the latest revision of 1999, discusses legal definitions of heritage, heritage management philosophies, the evolution of the archaeological sector c. 1970-2010, the practice of awarding archaeological contracts without tender by the BDA, excavation permits, training and career structures, the absence of minimum standards for archaeological excavation, and concludes with a set of recommendations on how preventative rather than reactive rescue archaeology could be implemented in Austria under current and improved heritage legislation.
