Vortically (2010) : for quarter-tone bass flute and live multichannel electroacoustics. 12 minutes. July 31, 2011. 2011 International Computer Music Conference, Huddersfield, UK
This work is the most recent of a series of collaborations with noted virtuoso and low flute specialist Carla Rees, and was especially conceived for the Kingma system quarter-tone bass flute. This was one of the first works composed for this new instrument and its unique capabilities, and as such the research output was not limited to the composition itself, but also fed into further refinements of the prototype instrument.
The work itself makes use of further refinements to my ongoing work in idiosyncratic additive synthesis techniques, interactive systems, and large scale spatialisation. (The submitted file is a stereo recording of the premiere, but the work has been presented in a variety of spatial configurations, including over a 60+ channel BEAST setup.)
The work has received a number of performances, including in Birmingham, London, at the International Computer Music Conference in Huddersfield, and at the University of Bangor. It is published by Teractys Publishing, both in the original Kingma system version and in a simplified version adapted for standard bass flute. (The latter, while not ideal was done in response to interest in the work by a number of other flutists, and should help the work achieve broader dissemination and impact.) A future recording is planned for Rarescale Records.
