A Riot of Our Own

This exhibition, curated by Tulloch, used an archival narrative on the Rock Against Racism Movement (RAR) 1976-1981, told through the personal archive of Syd Shelton and Ruth Gregory. Tulloch’s curatorial narrative was informed by the concept of ‘self-archiving’— an exploration of one’s own history through a re-acquaintance with, and re-assemblage of, the objects held in a personal archive. The presence of inter- and cross-cultural connections explored difference as conflict and unity between black and white people.

The exhibition was first shown at CHELSEA space, London in 2008, with funding from the Laura Ashley Foundation, toured to the Vibe Gallery, London in 2010 as the feature exhibition of the East End Film Festival, and then to Galerija Makina, Pula, Croatia in 2012 as part of the ‘We are Here 3’ International Festival of Visual Arts organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Istria, where only Syd Shelton’s photographs were on display (with sponsorship from Hewlett Packard). The exhibitions were supported by the publications A ‘Riot of Our Own’ 2008 and 2012, edited by Tulloch. Tulloch also published 'Rock Against Racism: 12 Points of Reference’ in ‘Re/Positionierung: Critical Whiteness/Perspectives of Color’, 2010. Syd Shelton’s photographs in the exhibition, have been added to the collections of the V&A Museum, in 2013 and Autograph ABP in 2011.
