This paper was developed via conversations with leading companies in the food and drink industry and led to the development of a project funded by DEFRA. The paper identified a lack of advanced maintenance and skilled operatives within the food industry. The outcomes from the project led to the development of a FP7 project and have informed maintenance teaching at the University of Sunderland.
