94 GHz dual-reflector antenna with reflectarray subreflector
For remote sensing applications reflector antennas normally employ motors to mechanically steer the beam. However a new and better engineering approach is described in this paper which shows that the beam can be tilted electronically by patterning the subreflector with an array of self-resonant elements. A new analytical technique is used to design the antenna and the validity of the proposed concept is proved experimentally. Follow on funding has been secured from the European Space Agency to develop the technology in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (project manager), using liquid crystal phase shifters integrated into the subreflector.
