Additional information
The potential of a sacrificial coating to protect steel, like a heat shield on a space vehicle, is investigated using a mathematical model. The basic premise of the model is that as coating is vaporised, heat is consumed in the phase-change process that would otherwise be used to increase the temperature of a steel substrate. However, what is unknown is what parameter values are required in order to give useful protection to a substrate. The model is used to estimate important parameter ranges to delay the limit the temperature rise of the substrate over a specific time scale.
