Leibniz and the Two Sophies: The Philosophical Correspondence
Drawing on original seventeenth- and eighteenth-century manuscripts held by Leibniz Bibliothek and Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv in Hanover, Strickland examined over 750 items, many of which had to be laboriously transcribed. The preliminary research took three years due to the difficulties involved in deciphering the manuscripts, and the need to cross-reference extant draft versions, which resulted in Strickland’s compilation of an elaborate critical apparatus, including extensive annotations, deletions and marginalia in variant sources. Many of the items selected for inclusion were in French, several were in German, one in Latin, and one in Dutch, necessitating consultation with a number of linguistic experts.
