Additional information

I exhibited nine paintings at this solo exhibition. Honor Fraser Gallery is a commercial gallery, representing international contemporary artists, both emerging and established (KAWS, Kenny Scharf, Rosson Crow, Erik Parker). The research imperative of this body of work was to build on the ideas and outcomes of my ‘Feelings and Other Forms’ exhibition: visually communicating sensation and exploring surface qualities of colour. The research continued to be studio based, focusing on a material relationship to image. I pursued varying levels of abstraction through the layering of either paint or metal leaf. As with previous exhibitions of mine, there were intended contrasts between works in terms of size (ranging from approx A4 to 180 x 220cm), material (acrylic, oil, metal leaf) and surface (flat or impasto). As part of the exhibition, a panel discussion, open to the public, was organized with the title ‘Is conviction in Painting possible?’. Speakers on the panel, in addition to myself, were Jens Hoffmann (Director CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco), Ed Schad (Curatorial Associate at the Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles), Liat Yossifer (an artist based in Los Angeles), Andrew Beradini (editor for Mousse magazine in Los Angeles and Assistant Curator for the Armory Center for the Arts). This panel discussion was an opportunity to further understand and enter into a dialogue about issues most pressing in contemporary painting: cultural and political contexts; its relation to other art media; possibilities and relevancies for the future. I was also invited to speak about the paintings I made for this exhibition at: UCA Farnham, UCA Canterbury, the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and Wimbledon School of Art, UAL.
