Finances, opinion publique et diplomatie: le Committee of Canada Merchants et la question de la liquidation des dettes françaises du Canada, 1763-1772
This chapter explores the relationship between Britain and France in the aftermath of the Seven Years War by looking at the question of French debts in Canada acquired by British merchants after the fall of Québec. Based on manuscript primary sources, in particular the correspondence between the Committee of Canada Merchants, who formed a powerful lobbying group, and the British and French governments, this chapter examines the ways in which the redemption of French debts to British owners fuelled political instability on both sides of the Channel and deteriorated international relationship tensions between the two countries.
