Church Music and Protestantism in Post-Reformation England : Discourses, Sites and Identities
This is a path-breaking monograph in the field of English reformation studies. Drawing on more than four years of full time research, it analyses a large amount of early modern printed material, as well as manuscript sources spread across eighteen English county record offices. It incorporates a number of distinct methodologies, including statistical analysis and close textual readings. It brings together interdisciplinary insights from history, philosophy, musicology, theology, sociology and anthropology. It presents a pioneering model of the integration of music into religious and cultural history, from the level of discourse and mentalité through society, community, belief, practice and identity
