This work presents a novel link between two research areas: Galactic astrophysics and asteroseismology. It demonstrates that solar-like pulsating red giants represent accurate distance and age indicators which can be used to map and date the Galactic disc with unprecedented accuracy. Miglio initiated, led, and - together with Chiappini - coordinated the work.
