English abstract

Methodistiaeth a Chymdeithas (Methodists and Society)

The chapter argues that the political and social outlook of the Welsh Methodists was transformed over the course of the nineteenth century. Initially conservative and loyal to the establishment, they were radicalised by the temperance campaign and by the various education acts. As a result, Methodists called for disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales. This, alongside the advent of the labour movement, paved the way for them to develop a social conscience in the early twentieth century.
