Near-surface crystallization of PET
This paper establishes a general mechanism for the observation of thin film and surface crystallization phenomena by linking, for the first time, the widely reported phenomenon of depressed surface Tg with the crystallization. Such an explanation is consistent with all previous studies of surface and thin film crystallization while demonstrating the underlying controlling phenomenon of enhanced surface molecular mobility. This work has opened up studies of surface-specific crystallization in a wide range of industrial polymers and also surface-specific phase separation. The project design, all experimental work and much of the data analysis was carried out in Oxford.
