Paradigma & Paradigma 2
‘Paradigma’ was co-curated by Professor Jack Cunningham with the world-leading jeweller, Professor Raman Puig Cuyas, each selecting 8 and 7 exhibitors from their respective schools. The work was presentedd at the School of Jewelley, Birmingham (14 Nov – 11 Dec 2009) and the Escola Massina, Barcelona (1 – 28 March 2010). Each exhibitor showed three pieces with a 50 page catalogue in Spanish and English.
The follow-up, ‘Paradigma 2’, featured the UK exhibitors, each showing six items with a 56 page catalogue in Mandarin and English. This exhibition was shown at the Fei Liu Gallery (27 May – 30 Jun 2010) and the UK Innovations, Shanghai Expo (3 – 18 September 2010).
Cunningham’s work for ‘Paradigma’ and ‘Paradigma 2’ was from his series exploring the expressive possibilities of found objects and ready-mades. They represented further extensions to Cunningham’s investigations into the possibilities of narrative jewellery, in which he is a leading figure.
The originality contained within the objects presented by the exhibiting jewellers, from Australia, England, Germany, Scotland and Spain, is explored through the artists’ statements and catalogue essays contributed by the researcher, Amanda Game, Professor Elizabeth Moignard and Fei Liu.
Funding was secured from Birmingham City Council, Escola Massana and International Partnership Programme Funding BCC. The British Council funded the exhibition at UK Innovations – this Expo reported an audience engagement of over 31,000 individuals.
