Double-weighted statement
The book investigates the concept of emperorship in late antiquity, covering an extensive and complex period that is seldom studied as a unity in its own right (recent work tends to centre on imperial biography). It draws on an unusually ambitious range of evidence. In particular, the marshalling of legal texts in the light of modern studies of the nature and uses of the Theodosian Code shapes a distinctive reading of the evolution of government structures and the imperial office. The focus on imperial women adds an extra degree of complexity to the book’s account of dynasty and legitimacy.
