Additional information

An earlier version of chapter 7 appeared in Italian in 2007 (in a journal bearing the date 2003). The material was thoroughly reworked and expanded (from c. 5000 to c. 18,000 words); it was also developed further by being carefully incorporated into a larger perspective on Greek poetics than the original Italian article possessed.

Double-weighted statement

Offers original and substantial readings of a series of major texts from Homer to Longinus. Advances a new model of the psychological dynamics underlying the history of ancient Greek poetics and engages critically with the whole range (in several languages) of modern interpretations of the subject, posing numerous challenges to traditional, orthodox positions in the field. Also brings to bear, strategically and comparatively, a knowledge of later poetic theory, thereby extending the book’s contribution to larger debates.
