Imaging three-dimensional tissue architectures by focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy.
This interdisciplinary collaboration between biologists and lifescience microscopists at the University of Cardiff and physical science microscopists at QMUL defined the detailed methodology for 3D imaging of complex biological structures. The work at QMUL was funded under the EPSRC Access to Materials Research Equipment Scheme (Grant No. EP/F019882/1). The method has wide applicability in biological and medical science and has since led to an invited book chapter in the series Methods in Cell Biology: ‘Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy’, Published by Elsevier (2012), Edited by T. Muller-Reichert and P. Verkade.
