Significance of output:

The containment of waste in landfill under current operational practices poses a potential pollution risk lasting centuries and new techniques to understand, shorten and reduce these risks are required. As part of a portfolio of projects amounting to £4M, this is the first paper that investigates the impact of compression, due to compaction and degradation, of new wastes under landfill conditions on properties controlling solute contaminant removal. The work will inform on-going field scale contaminant flushing studies aimed at reducing the long-term polluting potential of wastes, and shortening landfill aftercare periods.
