Additional information

This paper established the principle of generating artificial mammary glands in-vitro. Follow-up work demonstrates this with mouse cell-lines (PLOSOne2011;6:e25661) leading to CRUK collaborations to culture human cell-lines from reduction mammoplasties in the optimized scaffolds. Replacing in-vivo studies with an in-vitro humanized model would substantially reduce the use of animals in breast-cancer research and could be used in personalized treatments for breast cancer through tailored assays of biopsies. Cameron has secured follow-up funds from a €2.5M ERC Advanced Grant, and the Daphne Jackson and Isaac Newton Trusts. The work was featured on Radio 4’s “Leading Edge” programme.
