Additional information

This paper is a result of international collaboration between academics from Heriot-Watt University (UK), the Technion (Israel) and the University of Newcastle (Australia), part-funded by the Australian Research Council and Technion. It provides an improved understanding than heretofore of the mechanism of corrosion-induced cover cracking in reinforced concrete structures. The paper shows that the amount of corrosion products penetration surrounding a corroding reinforcing bar was previously estimated incorrectly. This has allowed more accurate estimates of the corrosion levels in both numerical and experimental subsequent studies in this area (Yu-Xi Zhao, Zhejiang University, yxzhao@zju.edu.cn, DOI:10.1016/j.corsci.2011.01.007; DOI:10.1016/j.corsci.2011.05.017; DOI:10.1016/j.corsci.2011.11.002; DOI:10.1016/j.corsci.2012.03.018; DOI:10.1016/j.corsci.2012.09.014).
