Additional information

This paper challenges the current methods for specifying concrete for resistance to carbonation-induced corrosion, using the CEN TS method developed at Dundee. It reports data representative of the whole UK, in terms of key materials (cement and aggregate type) used at ready mixed concrete plants. Laboratory and natural exposure data are given and collection of the data represents the largest project ever carried out on this issue. Test samples were produced by industry from every UK manufacturer. The data show that specifying strength and water/cement ratio alone is not adequate to ensure service-life design and direct performance testing is necessary.
